The Integrated Waste Worker Training Program, launched by Conserve India in March 2023 to mark Global Recycling Day, empowered over 300 informal waste workers in Ghaziabad through a 10-day blended training initiative. Focused on building technical proficiency in waste segregation, recycling, and composting, the program also addressed critical gaps in health, safety, and financial literacy. By combining environmental education, capacity building, and socio-economic support, the initiative positioned waste workers as key contributors to the circular economy—enhancing their dignity, resilience, and livelihood potential.

What we did

To commemorate Global Recycling Day 2023, Conserve India launched its Integrated Waste Worker Training Program—a flagship initiative designed to uplift and empower marginalized waste workers through structured, inclusive training. Conducted in Chipiyana Buzurg, Ghaziabad, the 10-day program engaged over 300 informal waste workers, equipping them with essential skills in safe waste management, recycling, and livelihood enhancement.

The program offered a well-rounded learning experience, beginning with technical sessions on waste segregation, recycling techniques, composting methods, and safe disposal. Complementary safety seminars focused on PPE usage, handling hazardous and biomedical waste, and emergency preparedness.

Environmental awareness was also a key focus, with campaigns on the impacts of improper waste disposal, principles of the circular economy, and community engagement through storytelling and demonstrations. Finally, the training included capacity-building modules on financial literacy, soft skills, and access to government welfare schemes, positioning participants as community leaders and change agents.

Why It Matters

Informal waste workers are the unsung heroes of India’s recycling system—yet they often operate without basic safety training, social recognition, or access to sustainable livelihoods. This initiative recognized their critical role in the circular economy and responded by building a foundation of skills, confidence, and resilience.

By addressing technical gaps, health risks, and economic exclusion, the program helped transform a vulnerable workforce into empowered recycling champions—contributing to both environmental sustainability and social equity.

Outcomes

  • Over 300 informal waste workers trained
  • Improved technical knowledge in waste sorting and handling

Conserve India’s Integrated Waste Worker Training Program is more than just a capacity-building exercise—it is a transformative intervention that restores dignity, nurtures leadership, and advances inclusive sustainability. From overlooked to empowered—this is what real change looks like.
