The Innovations
Conserve India pioneered the invention of Handmade Recycled Plastic (HRP)—a durable, waterproof, and patented textile created by upcycling single-use plastic bags. What began as a small-scale recycling initiative in Delhi soon evolved into a groundbreaking solution to address the challenge of non-recyclable plastic waste. After extensive experimentation, Conserve developed a proprietary process of washing, drying, layering, and heat-pressing plastic bags into flexible plastic sheets, giving birth to HRP.
Over the past fifteen years, the HRP innovation has supported the creation of a wide range of vegan, eco-friendly fashion products—including handbags, wallets, belts, and accessories—while creating sustainable livelihoods for waste workers and artisans from disadvantaged communities.
Why It Matters
India’s wool sector, especially in regions like Kashmir and Ladakh, faces mounting pressure from climate stress, resource scarcity, and economic vulnerability. These solar-powered machines offer innovative, scalable solutions that are not only climate-resilient, but also aligned with the needs of small-scale artisans and decentralized clusters. By combining clean technology with traditional craftsmanship, Conserve India is enabling a just transition to circularity—where sustainability is accessible, inclusive, and community-owned.

- Economic Empowerment Solar-powered machines significantly reduce operational costs and increase income opportunities for wool processors. Improved fiber quality can increase product value by 20–30%, enabling artisans to enter higher-value markets.
- Capacity Building Training in sustainable wool processing will equip local artisans and microenterprises with the skills and confidence needed to adopt and manage new technologies effectively.
- Environmental Sustainability The shift to solar energy eliminates reliance on fossil fuels and reduces emissions. Water-saving technology cuts usage by up to 2,000 liters per ton of wool, while byproducts like lanolin can be repurposed, further supporting circular production systems.
