Artisan

Conserve India implemented a six-day Integrated Capacity Building Program that empowered 150 artisans with a unique blend of traditional craft training, business skills, and psychosocial support. The initiative provided hands-on instruction in embroidery, stitching, weaving, crocheting, and block printing, while introducing Fair Trade principles, financial literacy, compliance practices, and labour rights education to help artisans operate in ethical and formal value chains. A dedicated focus on well-being and inclusive learning spaces further strengthened community trust and confidence. By bridging heritage craftsmanship with modern enterprise readiness, the program laid a strong foundation for dignified, sustainable livelihoods and a more resilient artisan economy.

What we did

In 2023, Conserve India launched a six-day Integrated Capacity Building Program designed to support artisans holistically—combining technical training, enterprise development, and psychosocial support. The program engaged 150 artisans, offering hands-on instruction in traditional crafts like stitching, embroidery, weaving, crocheting, and block printing, while introducing modern techniques and quality benchmarks to strengthen market competitiveness.
Alongside craft training, participants received structured learning in Fair Trade principles, business management, labour rights, accounting, and documentation—ensuring they could confidently operate within ethical and transparent value chains. The initiative also included a special session on Workers’ Rights and Well-being for both artisans and managerial staff, reinforcing safe, dignified, and inclusive working conditions.

Why It Matters

Artisan communities are central to India’s cultural and creative economy but often lack access to formal training, market linkages, and social support. Many operate informally, facing barriers in scaling their skills and sustaining livelihoods. This program recognized these challenges and addressed them through an integrated approach—focusing not just on skill-building, but also on enterprise readiness, worker rights, and mental wellness.

By creating a safe and inclusive learning space, the initiative supported artisans in navigating professional and personal challenges while building confidence, independence, and collective empowerment.

Outcomes

  • 150 artisans trained in both traditional and modern craft techniques
  • Improved product quality and market access through exposure to modern standards
  • Enhanced business skills including financial literacy, compliance, and documentation
  • Introduction to ethical practices through Fair Trade orientation
  • Strengthened awareness of workers’ rights and safe workplace standards

The Integrated Capacity Building Program marked a vital step in preserving traditional crafts while equipping artisans with the tools to thrive in a changing economy. By centering skills, dignity, and social equity, Conserve India reaffirmed its commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive, and ethical artisan ecosystem
